Behaviors that become addictive are ways we can cut off feelings of anxiety, pain and loss that seem beyond what is manageable and may include substance and alcohol abuse, eating disorders, gambling, shopping, pornography, and cutting. Clients need support to understand the roots of their pain and how to work through it without hurting themselves further. I work with a number of clients who are in early and long-term recovery. I also support families of addicts to help them understand the complexity of these behaviors, their origin, and the importance of establishing firm boundaries.
